What Are the Risks Involved for A Breast Augmentation?

Dr. Richard Arabitg,MD - Thursday, July 07, 2016

“The bigger the better!” Many women who come see plastic surgeons seeking breast augmentations often seem to live by this motto. Bigger boobs are not only a huge self-esteem booster, but also help women to feel and look sexier in their clothes. There are many positives that come out of getting breast augmentations, but like any other cosmetic surgery in Orlando, there are risks.

There are complications that can occur during any step of the breast augmentation procedure. The surgery in theory is very simple. First you are medicated with anesthesia for comfort during the procedure. Before you are even cut open there will be a risk that you might have a negative reaction to the anesthesia. Next, an incision is made in an inconspicuous area to minimize the possibility of visible scarring. Now, your body is open and you are at risk of infections. In the third step, the breast implants are inserted, the incisions are closed, and the procedure is done.

A big weight is lifted off your shoulders if you are able to bypass all the possible surgical complications that could have occurred, right? Well not exactly. A heavier weight is placed on your shoulders during the recovery period. Even as the pain from the surgery subsides, you still are not free from risks. The outcome is even scarier. There is a chance that the implants may have caused capsular contracture where the scar tissue that forms around the implant squeezes the implant. There may be even the common inflammation that occurs as a response of the body to infection and in worst-case scenarios, toxic shock syndrome. Redness, bruising, and skin rashes are also common.

After unveiling the breasts for the first time, the healing of your new breasts may have not been as smooth as you thought. There are risks that your breasts may now appear uneven in terms of size, shape, or breast level. The surgery may have also caused shrinking of the skin, calcification of hard lumps that will appear under the skin around the implant, deformity of the chest wall, the implant may have not been placed in the right position, or your implant may have been ruptured during the implantation process.

As the wounds heal there are risks that the final presentation of the new implants may be unsatisfactory. For example, you may be unhappy with how big/small the implants are, the implant may look unnatural, there could be wrinkling or sagging of the breasts. Botched breast augmentations are rare and may be irreversible.

In the long run, breast implants have an average limited life span of 7-10 years. Going under the knife again will be in your future whether to fix botched mistakes or to get new implants. Breast implants will always carry the risk of rupturing. We’ve all seen in the news of people whose breast implants “burst.” It is common and can be caused by anything from compression during a mammogram, any intense physical pressure, or simply by the natural aging of the implants. You will have to monitor your breasts for the rest of your life. There is also the risk that you may not be able to breastfeed your children. When you undergo this type of tissue reconstruction, the loss of breast tissue and the glands to produce milk are affected.

Your breast enhancement in Orlando can result in minimal effects if done by an experienced plastic surgeon.” The bigger the better” may not be the best motto to live by in this scenario. Bigger breast implants have a greater risk of being ruptured. Make sure to discuss with your surgeon your current health status and collaboratively decide on what the best size is for you. Make sure you know the risks and proceed with caution to maximize your happiness with your new boobs!
